Blackthorn ReachAldeburgh, Suffolk
The new
building form has been heavily influenced by four equally important issues - the
orientation and profile of the site, the
sensitive location, the
seamless integration of new and existing trees and landscaping into the
architectural aesthetic and the
desire to create a low carbon, sustainable and future proof dwelling.
It is intended
that the proposal will integrate the existing mature trees and further
extensive tree planting to create a dwelling that is sympathetically and highly
integrated into a strong landscape and ecology strategy.
To ensure that
the new building volume does not dominate the site but rather merges with it the client elected to ‘deconstruct’ the building form into a series of simple blocks
of various size and height. These are oriented into various directions to
capitalise on natural daylight and views within the site and towards the wider
context further afield. The play of light and shadow off the elevational
surfaces will break up and soften the perceived bulk when viewed from within
and from without the site. The arrangement of blocks will also create a series
of unique courtyard spaces around each specific room. New trees and planting
within these spaces will help to achieve these aims in a natural manner.
The project will be constructed to Passivhaus standards.
