ABOUT KFM

Practice Overview

Kirkland Fraser Moor is a multi-disciplinary, award-winning practice grounded in place, culture and craft, with a committed focus on environmentally and contextually informed design. Working across the UK and internationally, we combine tradition with an innovative spirit to create buildings that respond to their settings through thoughtful form-making, refined materiality, and a composed architectural language.

Our work spans a wide range of scales and purposes, from country houses and masterplans to spaces for education, culture and leisure, with specialist expertise in rural and protected environments. We work across diverse briefs, budgets and programmatic needs, shaping each commission in response to its specific context and potential. Our portfolio includes a distinguished body of work in conservation areas, greenbelts, and Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), including homes approved under Paragraph 84 of the National Planning Policy Framework—a policy that permits new homes in the countryside only where the design is of truly exceptional quality.

These projects demand a careful balance of planning insight, ecological understanding, and sensitivity to local identity—qualities that define our approach. Whether navigating complex planning frameworks or working with the nuances of a challenging site, we aim to create architecture that is responsive, enduring, and generous in its contribution to both people and place.

Beyond our built work, we are committed to nurturing future generations of designers and makers. Through D-Lab , a non-profit social enterprise studio founded by the practice, we support wider engagement in the creative industries by offering mentoring, resources and hands-on training. Programmes such as the A^3 Summer School, the Co-Creation Conference , and inductions into 3D printing, textiles, and VR are designed to foster collaboration, technical skills, and inclusive participation in design culture.

Our Design Philosophy

“We don’t replicate the vernacular, we extend it.”

At the heart of our work is a contemporary interpretation of Critical Regionalism. This approach grounds architecture in the specific character of its context—its geography, climate, history, and tradition—while embracing modern methods and materials to produce buildings that are unmistakably of their time.

Each project begins with a close reading of its physical and cultural landscape, laying the foundation for a site-specific response. We see architecture as a living framework capable of supporting social life, ecological balance, and long-term resilience. Rather than being imposed upon the land, our architecture emerges through a dialogue with it.

Our buildings are always an expression of collaboration with clients, consultants, and local stakeholders, reflecting a shared vision shaped by many voices. For us, a building is not a static edifice but a catalyst for community life—something that evolves with those who inhabit it and contributes meaningfully to collective experience.

We make purposeful use of local, natural and low-impact materials, combining traditional craft with contemporary tools. Technologies such as VR, BIM and environmental analysis support the design process by helping us test ideas, refine performance, and develop appropriate solutions from concept to construction, enriching our work while remaining anchored in the physical realities of building and the craft of making.

What does this look like in practice?

The ideas that guide our approach find tangible expression in the buildings we create. Foxglove House and Ashraya demonstrate how we translate our ethos into built form, through craftsmanship, technical rigour, and ecological intelligence.
